CSI’s Destination Zero and Prevent Suicide Fond du Lac County committees are excited to extend the opportunity to have someone from your organization certified as a QPR Instructor.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a concise (60 to 90 minute) suicide prevention training that has been proven to help individuals recognize the signs of emotional distress and suicidality in others and respond effectively. (More information can be found at https://qprinstitute.com.) We are offering Fond du Lac County organizations who are committed to equipping their staff or the individuals they serve with this life-saving information the opportunity to have one or two members of their organization become certified to deliver this suicide prevention training. By encouraging local organizations to make QPR gatekeeper trainings a part of worksite policy and training protocol, we aim to increase the number of individuals in our communities who are able to recognize the signs of mental distress in others (including co-workers, clients, family members, and friends) and have the confidence and tools to respond in a helpful way.

How will having a QPR Instructor benefit my organization?

Having an in-house QPR Instructor will streamline your organization’s training by creating capacity to teach current and new staff, volunteers, or consumers about suicide prevention, while eliminating the hassle of bringing in an outside trainer or the costs associated with off-site trainings. Newly trained instructors will be offered support and co-training assistance.

What are the costs associated?

Through Destination Zero grant funds we are able to cover the full cost of the training ($420 which includes all course materials, and the supplies to train 25 others) for participants who agree to the expectations outlined below. In an effort to maximize the reach of this effort, we are limiting this opportunity to two individuals per agency.  At the conclusion of the 3-year certification period, the trained instructor can choose to become re-certified through the QPR Institute.

Are there any additional expectations?

Yes. In addition to promoting the use of QPR within their agency, those who attend will be added to our county’s pool of certified QPR trainers and will be expected to co-lead at least one community-based training in each of the next three years. Volunteering their time in this way allows QPR to be offered free of charge to organizations/groups throughout the county. They also must agree to provide basic reporting information (sign-in sheet and evaluation data) on the sessions they lead. This reporting allows us to track the reach and impact of QPR in Fond du Lac County, which is vital to securing the funds needed to sustain the training effort.

What skills and experience are needed to become a QPR Instructor?

The skills needed include the ability to speak in front of a group, communicate ideas effectively, and cultivate a safe and effective learning environment. No experience is necessary, but previous training/teaching experience is helpful. Basic knowledge about suicide prevention strategies or willingness to learn best practices around suicide prevention is desired.

Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Class size is limited and a waiting list will be created.
